Take
the kids to Sugar Camp days! Evie Kirkwood Of St. Joseph County Parks
says.. It takes roughly 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of pure maple
syrup? Maple sap can only be collected at the end of winter, when the
temperatures are above freezing the daytime, and below freezing at
night. Bendix Woods County Park in New Carlisle is hosting Sugar Camp
Days, March 16 and 17 with lots of activities for kids: horse drawn
wagon rides, kids crafts, candle dipping and more!
Entrance is charged $7 per vehicle so team up with someone from school to save on admission!
This is a super fun event! We normally go early for the pancake breakfast ($7 adult; $3.50 6-11; 5 & under free) - its unlimited pancakes & sausage with maple syrup - YUM! And we stay for the activities - wagon rides, walking tour of the sugar bush, ice carving, blacksmith demo, historical demos, pioneer toys, crafts, & music. You can make it a whole day event (ends at 3). There's also a great playset for the kids to play on.
ReplyDeleteOne fun thing to plan for next year - In April, you can go on a Saturday morning and help tap the maple trees. This is a family favorite for us. We are outside, in the woods, helping out the park. It's normally cold, but we love it! We also "Rent-A-Sap-Bucket" each year. This gets our names placed on a bucket - fun to find during Sugar Camp Days - & great photo op. You get a free adult breakfast, pancake mix, and of course, free maple syrup! Plus, you are helping to support Bendix Woods Co. Park!
